“David Adedeji Adeleke” popularly known as “Davido” is an American-born Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer born on November 21 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to business mogul and University Don, Adedeji Adeleke and Vero Adeleke. He is the last of 5 siblings and the second son.
He attended the British International School, Lagos. At 16, he commenced further studies in Business Administration at the Oakwood University in Alabama, US.
EARLY LIFE & CARRIER
He started making music quite early while at Oakwood. Together with his cousins B-Red and Sina Rambo, he formed the music act KB International. He dropped out of Oakwood University a while later to pursue music fully. During this period, he relocated to London to further drill his musical skills. He later returned to Nigeria in 2011 and continued his schooling by enrolling in Babcock University, Ogun State. He graduated in 2015 with a degree in music.
The Afropop musician started his active music career in 2009.
On his return to Nigeria in 2011, he started working on his first studio album “Omo Baba Olowo” which featured a mix of Afrobeats and hip hop.
It was produced by Shizzi, Theory Soundz, Jay Sleek, Maleek Berry, GospelOnDeBeatz, Spellz, Dokta Frabz and Mr Chidoo and guest appearances from Naeto C, Ice Prince, 2 Baba, Kayswitch.
“Back When”, the album’s lead single, was released on May 7 2011. It was produced by Davido himself and the video was directed by Clarence Peters. Naeto-C also assisted in this track.
Despite the criticisms, the album won Best R&B/Pop Album and received nominations for Album of the Year at The Headies 2013 and Best Album of the Year at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Davido won the Next Rated award at The Headies in 2012 after releasing “Dami Duro”, a single from his debut studio album “Omo Baba Olowo” .
On 25th February 2013, Davido released “Gobe” which was ranked second on Premium Times’ list of the top 10 songs of 2013. The video was recorded in South Africa by Godfather Productions.
In January 2016, he signed a record deal with Sony Music. Later the same year, he founded his own record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) on which is signed Dremo, Mayorkun, Peruzzi and Liya. In July 2016, he signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records
In October 2016, Davido released a 5-track EP “Son of Mercy” and sequently by the singles “Gbagbe oshi”, “How Long” and “Coolest Kid in Africa”.

Due to creative control issues, Davido renegotiated his contract with Sony in 2017 and he later released 5 singles including “If” and “Fall”. “Fall” becoming the longest-charting Nigerian pop song in Billboard history.
At the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards, Davido won Best African Act and was one of the Best Worldwide Act recipients. The song “If” won Best Pop Single and Song of the Year at The Headies 2018.
He released “Assurance” on April 30, 2018, which coincided with the birthday of his girlfriend, Chioma. He was said to have promised her his love and commitment regardless of the times and tides.

At some point, Davido was accused of being a member of the cult group Black Axe Confraternity. This was incited by the the symbols and gestures which he made in his music videos and pictures, and also by a Daily Post report on September 5, 2018 where a suspected Black Axe cult member said he was lured into the group with claims that he would meet and interact with the celebrity.
In January 2019, Davido sold out The 02 Arena in London, becoming the first solo African artist to do so. He released his second studio album “A Good Time”, in November 2019 supported by the singles “Blow My Mind” featuring American singer Chris Brown. It was produced by Shizzi and the video directed by Edgar Esteves.
